Reggae Girlz draw with Panama; miss automatic qualification for Concacaf Gold Cup
KINGSTON, Jamaica— The Reggae Girlz missed out on automatic qualification for next year’s inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup after a 1-1 draw with Panama at the National Stadium on Wednesday.
Jamaica fell behind in the 30th minute after conceding a penalty which Marta Cox converted.
The Girlz equalised just before the halftime break through a well-timed volley from Shaneil Buckley.
Clear cut chances were hard to come by in the second half but Marlo Sweatman had one of the best opportunities but her tame right footed effort failed to trouble Panama Goalkeeper Yenith Bailey.
Midfielder Israela Groves also had a great chance in the 88th minute with a long range effort but Bailey made the save to keep the game at 1-1.
In stoppage time, Sweatman latched on to a deep free kick but her header went just wide which meant the teams would share the points.
The result meant Panama secured qualification by topping the group with seven points, five ahead of Jamaica in third.
The Xavier Gilbert-coached team will have to beat second place Guatemala who are on four points, to make the playoffs in a bid to qualify through one of the three remaining spots.
