Late surge puts Perfect Brew in winners’ enclosure
Despite not racing against much competition, the Richard Azan-conditioned Perfect Brew continued to demonstrate his talent with a commanding run to win the $1.4-million, top-rated, Open Allowance contest at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
The three-year-old and upward event lost part of its competitiveness with the absence of Rani Bangala, but Perfect Brew kept racing fans delighted with his late rattle in deep stretch to win the seven-furlong (1,400m) event by 5 1/2 lengths.
Instead of racing with the leaders, Perfect Brew sat in third place behind the front runners and watched as stablemate Laban (Abigail Able) established the fractions ahead of Freedom Street (Javanie Patterson) down the backstretch.
Punters were on their feet as Laban increased the tempo and attempted to steal a march on the field approaching the half-mile (800m), gaining a five-length lead ahead of Freedom Street with Perfect Brew still finding his stride.
Perfect Brew began his run nearing the distance and came off the final curve on the heels of the leaders, restoring some pace among the form players. Perfect Brew surged to the lead inside the final furlong and a half (300m) to pull away from Freedom Street and Laban to win easily at the wire. Rainsville finished the frame in the four-horse field with a timing of 1:25.2 (23.2 x 46.0 x 1:10.4).
Perfect Brew was the second winner on the day for Azan and the third for Foster. Azan and Foster had earlier teamed up with two-year-old Matuso to win the $1.01-million Andrew HB Aguilar Memorial Cup over one mile (1,600m).
Foster then partnered the Dalton Sirjue’s Sneaky Joe to victory in the fourth race for his three-timer.
Racing continues today with a 10-race programme. First post is at 11:30 am.
