BELFIELD, St Mary — Councillor for St Mary’s Belfield Division, Levan Freeman is confident that he will once again win the seat for the People’s National Party when local government elections are called.

Freeman, who was mayor of Port Maria from 2012 to 2016, has dismissed detractors’ claims that he is a non-performer.

“I don’t loud up my thing as I’m always on the ground working, reaching out to everyone; not like some persons who [only] look out for their side of the fence,” he told the Jamaica Observer in a recent interview.

He readily admits there is still work to be done but believes he has earned a passing grade. He believes he has done a lot with limited of resources.

“Most of the roads have been rehabilitated; the schools in the division have seen improvements. I am reaching out to the people and the young people are realising that I am genuine,” Freeman said of his efforts to secure another term.

The three-term councillor is particularly proud of the work he has done in agriculture.

“Belfield was once a top farming community in cocoa, chocolate; now the focus is on bananas, plantains and Scotch bonnet peppers,” he explained, adding that this has created employment for residents who have found jobs on farms in the division.

Freeman has signalled that, if re-elected, it would be his final run for office. So it is important to him to see one major project become a reality if he is once again tapped to serve: a bridge at Egypt Pen which would make commuting so much easier for area residents.

“I wouldn’t say this would be my legacy, it would be for the people,” said Freeman.
