Faulkland take on Racing in JFF Championship
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Faulkland FC and last season’s semi-finalists Racing United, who will meet at Jarrett Park today starting at 3:00 pm, are among six teams seeking back-to-back wins to start the Jamaica Football Federation Championship.
Tru-Juice FC, Reno FC, Portlanders FC, and St Bess United were also winners in last weekend’s opening round.
Faulkland FC, who were relegated from the Premier League after just one season, eked out a slim 1-0 win over Hopewell United on Saturday and will host a Racing United team that won 2-0 at Gray’s Inn.
Last season, Racing United from St Catherine topped the first-round points table but lost in the semi-finals. Their goal this season must be to go one step further.
Tru-Juice FC, who were also semi-finalists last season, started on fire with a big 5-0 hammering of promoted Petersfield FC and will be away to Meadforest FC at Constant Spring.
Meadforest FC were ambushed 2-3 by Portlanders FC in their first game and will hope home field advantage will give them an edge against the Tru-Juice team that is expected to be led by Sivon Thompson, who scored a hat-trick last week, and Colicke Richards who got a brace.
Portlanders FC, one of the clubs playing in the competition for the third year, will hope to extend their good start when they travel to face Baptist Alliance who drew their opening game against Chapleton Maroons.
Calvin Baxter was the star for the Portlanders FC team in their opening game, scoring a brace, and he could be the target man again today.
St Bess United could make it two from two when they host a Hopewell United team that underwhelmed against Faulkland FC last week.
Hopewell, however, made things difficult for Faulkland FC, only conceding in the last five minutes, but if they are to come away with a win today they must improve on last weekend’s performance.
Reno FC are still unproven as their win came via the boardroom after Falmouth United had failed to prepare their field. Reno will host Brown’s Town at Llandilo Sports Grounds in Westmoreland.
