Major label comes calling after RT Boss
Over the past two years major labels have courted many Jamaican acts. Among those who have signed deals are dancehall standouts Masicka, Teejay, and Valiant.
Emerging dancehall deejay RT Boss could join that elite list, thanks to the viral success of his dance hit Ben Ben Ben Back.
It is understood that the artiste is being courted by a major US label, which has had success in the 1990s with Jamaican acts.
When the Jamaica Observer caught up with RT Boss, whose real name is Nardo Smith, on Thursday he refused to reveal the name of the record label. He however stated: “Discussions are at an advanced stage right now, so until it all comes together I am not able to comment on it.”
Ben Ben Ben Back was released in December via RT Records.
The artiste had a dance challenge on social media platform TikTok which has aided in its viral explosion.
Said RT Boss: “Ben Ben Ben Back [is] a high-energy dancehall song that has the females going crazy doing ‘bend’ dances on TikTok and other social media platforms. The song has really created a viral moment. It’s trending on TikTok, and social media personalities such as Queenie, Amari, Cheeseford, Shebada, and Roger have been pushing the song. Dem love the lyrics and the rhythm and the vibes!”
A video for Ben Ben Ben Back, which was recently shot, is expected to be released next week.
Success Just Begin, his first song, was recorded in 2019.
Earlier this week, photos of social media sensation Queenie and RT Boss in a seemingly romantic position were leaked to social media.
RT Boss has denied any such involvement with her.
“Queenie is a good friend of mine, and she has been promoting the song on her platform, and this has brought us some good results. There is nothing going on between us other than business,” said RT Boss.
