Miss Cookie, Gujurat win Capital Betting/Observer Tipsters’ Competition
Bernadette Bishope (Miss Cookie) and Anthony Allen (Gujurat) emerged overall champions of the 2023 Capital Betting and Wagering Limited/Jamaica Observer Tipsters’ Competition after some exciting tipping and wagering.
Bishope took first place in the Most Wins category, while Anthony Allen took first place in the Monetary category. Both tipsters received $50,000 in prize money for their efforts on Thursday at the Escape Bar & Grill in New Kingston.
Bishope, who led from the start, had to pull out all the stops in the last quarter to win by four winners against three-time defending champion Ruddy Allen (Kool Kat). Bishope had led by as many as 15 winners at one time and finished with 309 wins to Ruddy Allen’s 305 wins.
Anthony Allen maintained his form well throughout the year and finished in third place on 289 winners, two wins ahead of Leslie McLean (Hot Spur) in fourth place on 287 winners. The remaining tipsters were Sherdon Cowan (The General – 266 wins), Kingsley Gentles (The Genius – 261 winners), Jason Duncan (Jah Son – 255 winners), Donald Bahadur (Sir Donald – 238 winners), and Robert Bailey (Bailey – 214 winners).
“It’s a good feeling to win the competition. I mean, we have some good tipsters here and to finish on top must be a great feeling. The plan is to defend my title,” Bishope told the Jamaica Observer.
In the Monetary category, Anthony Allen rallied in the final quarter to complete the year with $22,000, dethroning last year’s double winner Ruddy Allen. Bishope ended with $2,521, ahead of Cowan, who finished third with $2,072. The other tipsters had exhausted their quota.
Each tipster starts the year with a nominal figure of $20,000 to place their bets. They can bet a minimum of $250 per race day.
The competition offers quarterly prize money of $20,000 to the tipster who accumulates the most money above $20,000. The tipster with the most wins at the end of the quarter also gets $20,000.
