Wright pleased after Molynes edge Humble Lion
Buoyed by his recent call-up to the Reggae Boyz Training Camp, Molynes United Captain Jason Wright says he was elated to help his team move farther away from the relegation zone after a tense 3-2 win over Humble Lion in the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League on Sunday at Stadium East.
Wright netted his fifth goal of the season just before half-time as he put Molynes 3-0 heading into the break after teammates Sergeni Frankson and Tyrique Wilson netted in the eighth and 41st minutes, respectively.
Humble Lion forced their way back into the game with goals from Karim Bryan in the 66th minute and Chandon Anderson in the 74th minute, but Molynes held on for the victory.
Wright was happy to prove his worth to the national set-up with his performance on the day.
“It’s always a plus to be included in any national programme, so for me being involved was something nice and that drove me more to come out today and perform well and lift my team out of the position we were in,” he told the
Jamaica Observer.
Molynes remain 12th in the table but jump to 14 points, seven points clear of the drop zone and Wright believes this is a stepping stone for the team going forward.
“It’s a big three points for us. I think 3-0 at half-time, we were on top and in the second half, we took our foot off the gas and we allowed Humble Lion to get back in the game [but] it’s very important that we got these three points. I think it will be a massive boost of confidence and momentum going into the back end of the season,” he said.
Head Coach Jermaine Thomas took over in December when the club had no wins to their name. After registering their third in as many games, he’s confident they can go on a run and stay in the league.
“We knew Humble Lion were going to push numbers forward, we didn’t handle that well, hence we didn’t match up well in the midfield and the back. But guess what, at this stage of the competition, [getting] three points is the order of the day. When I came here we had four points, today we have 14 so I mean that’s a plus. I’m not entirely happy with everything I saw today, I thought tactically we were a bit indisciplined but we’re going back to the training pitch and will be fixing a couple of things,” he said.
“We do have some tough games to come, we have Mount Pleasant, Portmore, so it’s a lot. For me, it’s to make sure we play Premier League. We brought in some new players in this window and couple of them started today so I’m thinking once we continue to play and get game time, everybody will be a little bit sharper and better,” Thomas added.
