Two women accused of conning 33 in million-dollar dollar job scam
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Two women were dragged before the St James Parish Court on Wednesday for allegedly duping more than 30 people out of more than $1 million through a deceptive scheme that promised overseas employment.
Kedine Samuels and Shaniel Jones appeared before presiding Judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley to face a charge of obtaining money by means of false pretence. They are represented by attorney-at-law Khadine Colman, who was unable to attend.
Based on court documents, Samuels and Jones operate an international employment programme without the necessary legal authorisation to carry out such activities.
It is alleged that between January and December of 2023 the defendants collected J$639,000, US$3,700 and passports from 33 individuals, promising to place them in jobs overseas.
After a period of waiting, the expected employment opportunities failed to materialise, and the complainants did not receive a refund.
As a result, the matter was reported to the police, which led to the two women being charged. It was revealed in court that Samuels has similar matters pending in another jurisdiction.
Also during Wednesday’s proceedings, it was revealed that the complainants’ passports were not recovered and cannot be located. A number of other passports were recovered and are in possession of the police, but none belong to any of the 33 individuals.
Samuels and Jones were remanded in police custody until February 8.
