PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Protests shut down major cities in Haiti on Monday as demonstrators clashed with police and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

According to an article from The Associated Press, local media reports say banks, schools and government agencies were rendered closed in Haiti’s northern and southern regions as protesters blocked main routes with blazing tyres, paralysing public transportation.

Smaller demonstrations took place in the capital of Port-au-Prince, where dozens of protesters reportedly gathered in front of Henry’s office before police fired tear gas, dispersing the crowd.

AP News says presidential candidate and former Prime Minister Claude Joseph was among the protesters and was reportedly captured in a video wiping his face as supporters yelled, “We are not stopping!”

Haiti is expected to undergo three days of protests as Wednesday, February 7 will mark the deadline for Henry’s resignation.
