ST JAMES, Jamaica – Businessman in St Ann, Kumar Sujanani, has pledged to donate 25 new computers to the Ocho Rios Primary School as part of a drive to get more young students involved in digital technology.

Making the announcement at a gathering of stakeholders and business interests in Ocho Rios, St Ann, on March 5, Sujanani said he also plans to refurbish the school’s computer lab to provide students with a modern and conducive learning environment.

“It came to my attention that the Ocho Rios Primary School, located in a community in which I operate a successful business for nearly 50 years, is in need of some computers,” he said.

The donation, he said, is also part of a broader commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in the St Ann region, noting that in addition to the Ocho Rios Primary, there are also plans to do a similar gesture at both the Exchange All-Age and the St Ann’s Bay Primary before year end.

The goal, Sujanani said, is to extend support to more schools throughout the garden parish, adding that the importance of giving back to a community he calls home and to improve the lives of students as it relates to technology is something “I hope we will see more of in communities right across the island”.

Principal of Ocho Rios Primary, Suzette Wilson, said the initiative by Sujanani reflects a commendable dedication to community development and education in Jamaica, adding that his efforts are set to make a significant impact on the learning experience and future prospects of countless students, paving the way for a brighter and more technologically literate generation.

“Mr Sujanani’s vision extends beyond mere donations. His goal, as he clearly states, is to equip students with the necessary tools and skills in information technology, particularly focusing on the younger generation. By providing access to modern computing resources, he is bridging the technological gap and ensuring that students are well prepared for the digital age,” she said.

“We here at the Ocho Rios Primary School are celebrating 75 years. We are grateful that we have people here in the town of Ocho Rios who feel this way about education,” she added.

Sujanani, owner of the Gem Palace Duty Free Stores, with other locations in Ocho Rios and Falmouth, has been in business since 1977 and has received numerous awards for philanthropy.

The Jamaica Cancer Society, Ocho Rios Police Station and Area Two Police, and Special Olympics are just some of the organisations that have benefited from his goodwill over the years.
