Caricom ‘deeply concerned’ about Ecuador’s raid of Mexican Embassy

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC0 – The Caribbean Community (Caricom) has expressed deep concerned about Ecuador’s recent actions “that have violated the premises of the Embassy of Mexico in Quito”.

Mexico’s government ended diplomatic ties with Ecuador after police broke into the Mexican Embassy late Friday to arrest former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas.

“Member States of Caricom reaffirm the importance of adherence to the principles of international law and rules of diplomatic engagement enshrined in the Vienna Convention which codifies the inviolability of diplomatic missions and consular offices,” Caricom said in a brief statement on Sunday.

“We anticipate that both states will seek to resolve the matter through dialogue and access to relevant multilateral process with a view to ensuring that our region remains one of peace.”

Following Glas’ arrest, leaders from across the Americas voiced outrage at the incident and Mexico’s president announced he was breaking diplomatic ties with Ecuador.

Glas had been convicted on charges of bribery and corruption and remains under investigation for other potential crimes.
