Provident makes encouraging start to racing career
THREE-YEAR-OLD chestnut colt Provident made an encouraging debut on Saturday, April 20, 2024 when he came from behind rivals to win a Maiden Condition call for native-bred three-year-olds at 6½ furlongs.
Owned by Carlton Watson and trained by Jason DaCosta, Provident won the race going away by 2¼ lengths in a time of 1:23.0 (24.2 x 48.3 x 1:15.3).
Provident was unable to go with the early speed, settling among the backmarkers as
Affair (Raddesh Roman) led the field ahead of Mack and Rome (Robert Halledeen). The leaders continued to set the pace down the backstretch as Provident started to gain.
Provident came into contention when he surrounded horses to be in fourth place approaching the distance, as Mack and Rome was sent through to pick up the running.
Mack and Rome turned for home with the lead but Panamanian jockey Josue Osorio produced his mount on the outside and Provident responded by flashing clear of rivals to open his account the first time of asking.
Mack and Rome held their gallop well to finish in second place, ahead of Rock-Ola ridden by leading jockey Tevin Foster.
Provident is bred by Sensational Slam out of Dream Point.
