‘Bunny’ Shaw named 2024 Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year

Jamaica’s Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw has been named the 2024 Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Women’s Footballer of the Year in the United Kingdom.

The 27-year-old, who plays for Manchester City, reportedly gained 53 per cent of all votes cast to walk away with the win. According to Manchester City on its website, highlighting Shaw’s latest accomplishment, it was the most votes for a women’s award in FWA history.

She beat out teammate Alex Greenwood and Chelsea’s Lauren James for the nod, becoming the second player from Manchester City to win the prestigious award.

The Jamaican striker, who is now recovering from a broken leg, joined Manchester City in 2021. However, her impressive run this season saw her scoring a whopping 21 goals from 18 league appearances, helping to propel her club toward what would be its first Women’s Super League title since 2016.

In addition to the Footballer of the Year award, Shaw is also a shoe-in for the coveted Golden Boot presented to the league’s leading scorer.

In accepting the award, Shaw said she felt “very proud and privileged” to have been recognised with the “special honour.”

She also used the opportunity to thank her teammates stating that they played a pivotal role in providing her with chances to score goals.

“I also owe a lot to Gareth, the rest of the coaching team and everyone else here at City. It’s a pleasure to be part of such a special group,” she expressed further. “Many thanks to all who voted for me and to my fellow nominees. It means such a lot to have won this award. Hopefully the side can now finish off the season in style and give everyone special cause to celebrate.”
