WATCH: Evelyn King brings down the house at Mother’s Day show
KINGSTON, Jamaica — R&B artiste Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King brought the house down in front of a Mother’s Day crowd at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre on Sunday.
The headliner for the GEM… With A Little Help From Friends event took to the stage at around 11:15 pm and performed an impressive 45-minute set which included her 1982- hit ‘Love Come Down’ and crowd favourite ‘Shame’.
At 63 years old the New York native showed that she still had spunk as she rocked her hips effortlessly to the up tempo rhythms that characterised her set.
The entertainer was joined on set by her husband of over 30 years Freddie Fox, who also got in on the action as he wowed with his acoustic skills.
King further stunned the audience, when she showed off her drumming skills towards the end of her performance, all while singing and dancing up a storm.
Following her performance Observer Online caught up with the singer who shared that she was elated to be in Jamaica for a third time, noting that she had performed on the island in 1979 and 1983.
“It’s been a while, but I am so happy to be back in Kingston, Jamaica. I missed my loving fans from back in the day. But I’m here and I had a good time,” King said.
King further shared that her classical hits still gets her bookings, adding that she continues to perform across the United States and Europe.
“Shame’, ‘Love Come Down’ and ‘ I’m in Love’ have been keeping me going. I have not stopped since 1977,” added King.
George Nooks, Kevoy Clarke, Delano McFarlane and Gem Myers also performed at the event which is held annually to celebrate moms.
