Veekle drives into local car rental market

Fresh off its rebrand and relaunch earlier last month, peer-to peer platform Veekle is already pressing gas on its mission to becoming the go-to source for car rental services regionally. This, as it creates an affordable, safe, and seamless experience for users across the Caribbean.

The company, which was first started by founder and CEO Cherie Williams back in 2020 under the name Rent Yuh Ride, has since undergone a major overhaul, refreshing its name and business model, making a comeback with big ambitions for growth throughout the region.

“Veekle is the Caribbean’s first peer-to-peer car renting platform which was designed to connect local car owners with individuals looking to rent a car. Our platform offers a safe, convenient, and cost-effective solution for both car owners and travellers. Whether you want to explore the Caribbean or create a source of income by renting your car, Veekle is the perfect solution,” Williams said in sharing the start-up details of her company with the Jamaica Observer recently.

“Our primary operations are based in Jamaica, but our platform will soon be designed to serve the entire Caribbean region. We are building a network that will allow us to expand our services to other islands, creating a cohesive and comprehensive car renting solution across the Caribbean,” she further told
Sunday Finance.

Targeting both local car owners and travellers, the company said it utilises a dual market approach to cater to a wide range of user needs, enhancing value as it also offers attractive rewards in the process.

Through its promised insurance protection, 24/7 roadside assistance, free membership and ease of booking options, Veekle embraces a new era of car rental in Jamaica and the Caribbean, driven by a platform designed for the modern traveller who seeks to turn trips into memorable moments as they explore the islands in style.

Immediately on listing a vehicle, the platform seeks to make it accessible to a broad audience of frequent travellers. After forging a partnership with the Insurance Company of the West Indies (ICWI), this has also ensured that every transaction on the start-up’s platform is underpinned by insurance coverage, which, in turn, provides that peace of mind to both car owners and travellers.

The business, having started out of the CEO’S own frustration with the current car rental process in Jamaica, diligently leverages technology in transforming the traditional car rental market.

“After moving to the US, I committed to supporting locals by renting cars from them during my visits. However, this often involved a cumbersome and unreliable process of contacting multiple people and waiting for hours. This sparked the idea for Veekle — a streamlined platform that not only simplifies the car renting process but also empowers local owners to earn income from their cars,” Williams said.

The company, in priding itself on transparent pricing and reliable protection, said its system was developed to eliminate hidden fees and unexpected surprises.

“Say goodbye to the traditional complexities of renting a vehicle; with Veekle, a few simple clicks will secure the perfect car for your Caribbean adventure, whether you’re seeking an affordable family car rental, a luxury ride, or an eco-friendly option,” the company’s website noted.

Funded out of pocket from personal savings and with the support of close associates, the CEO said new opportunities for funding are now being explored as the company prepares for the next phase of growth.

“We will be launching a crowd funding campaign to further support our growth and development. Additionally, we are actively seeking strategic partnerships and sponsorships to provide the financial backing needed to expand our services and enhance our platform,” Williams stated, while also noting the company as a beneficiary of the Development Bank of Jamaica’s (DBJ) Ignite Grant.

Following its official launch on May 13, 2024, the start-up company has already started to on-board a number of users through its platform, which is now available for download from the App Store and the Google Play Store in June.

“In the next three-five years, we envision Veekle becoming the leading peer-to-peer car renting platform in the Caribbean. Our plans include expanding our services to other islands, establishing a strong presence in each locale as we continuously improve our platform to meet user needs.

“We aim to introduce advanced features, such as loyalty programmes, advanced booking options, and partnerships with local businesses to enhance the user experience. Our ultimate vision is to make Veekle a household name across the Caribbean, synonymous with reliable, accessible, and eco-friendly car renting,” Williams said of the outlook.
