As Jamaica continues its push for major constitutional changes, the Jamaica Observer today starts a series of articles by attorney-at-law and constitutional expert Dr Lloyd Barnett on the major proposals from the Constitutional Reform Committee (CRC).

IN our new Constitution the British King will no longer be our head of State.

1. This is of special historical significance because the title of the present King, Charles III, is repugnant as it reminds us that of the previous holders of the British title King Charles, the first, was a despot and religious persecutor and the second King Charles was grossly immoral and a supporter of the slave trade.

2. Reference to His Majesty as part of our legislative, executive or judicial branch will no longer be retained.

3. Criminal cases will be brought as “Jamaica” or “the State” against the named accused and the courts will open with an appropriate declaration such as “God Save Jamaica” instead of “God save the King”.

4. Our laws will be passed in the name of the Parliament of Jamaica and will be signed by a Jamaican president on behalf of the people of Jamaica.
