Corinaldi Avenue celebrate winning back-to-back U-13 football titles
TUCKER, St James — Corinaldi Avenue Primary completed back-to-back perfect win seasons as they beat rivals Barracks Road Primary 2-0 at WesPow Park on Friday to retain the St James Football Association/Victoria Mutual Foundation Under-13 title.
It was Corinaldi Avenue Primary’s fourth win overall after title triumphs in 1993 and 1994, and a good end to a season in which they also won the INSPORT All-Island title.
Granville Primary finished third after Flankers Primary failed to show up for the third-place game.
Deon Stern-Anglin, principal of Corinaldi Avenue Primary which was founded over 150 years ago, said the students, coaches and teachers worked hard and were deserving of their victory
“It is a culture of excellence and greatness that we cultivate here,” she told
Jamaica Observer.
“This is the same team that won last year and this has been a good year for the school and a good year for football.”
Adriano Bennett gave Corinaldi Avenue Primary the lead in the 22nd minute. Jayden Smith doubled the advantage in the 50th minute when his shot from well outside the area lodged into the top left-hand corner of the Barracks Road Primary goal.
The game, for the most part, lived up to expectations between two fierce rivals who had gone unbeaten all season.
Corinaldi Avenue only conceded twice in nine games played all season, in the quarter-finals against Catherine Hall and the semi-finals against Flankers Primary.
Barracks Road topped their first-round group and did not concede a goal, but drew two games before winning 2-1 in the quarter-finals and 3-1 in the semi-finals.
Corinaldi Avenue also swept most of the awards, with Donovan Carey named the Most Valuable Player. The school also won the most attacking and best defensive team awards.
Tehron Brissett of Catherine Hall Primary was the leading scorer with nine goals while his teammate Rajanae Thompson was named Best Female Player. Catherine Hall also won the award for Most Disciplined Team.
