Romaine Beckford retains NCAA high jump titles

EUGENE, Oregon — Romaine Beckford of the University of Arkansas successfully defended his National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Outdoor high jump title at the Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene on Friday.

Beckford, who had won the event last year while competing for the University of South Florida, cleared a height of 2.26m on his second attempt to secure his gold medal in the event.

Nebraska junior Tyus Wilson was second with 2.23m while Arkansas-Pine Bluff senior Caleb Snowden was third.

The former St George’s College football player also had three unsuccessful attempts at the Olympic qualifying mark of 2.33m.

In March, Beckford had retained his NCAA indoor high jump title after clearing a personal best and college-leading 2.27m.
