Be your brother’s keeper, JCC head tells Jamaicans
PRESIDENT of the Jamaica Council of Churches (JCC) Bishop Christine Gooden Benguche is urging Jamaicans to be their brother’s keeper in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.
“Truly in times like these, this is the call to be our brother’s and sister’s keeper.” she said.
Bishop Benguche has also urged community members to give some assistance to those who are most vulnerable and are not able to help themselves.
She stressed the importance of awareness within neighbourhoods, noting that it is unlikely that persons could be living in a community, on a particular street and not be aware of those who need extra care.
“We have to remember those in particular who are disabled and who are vulnerable and give special attention to those persons,” she urged.
Bishop Benguche, who is head of the Jamaica Methodist Church, said that various denominations are advised to reach out to the vulnerable and the shut-ins.
She noted that churches can also collaborate with government agencies to mobilise assistance.
“We work along with the shelters and the [relief] agencies. As long as we are able, I do not see any denomination not offering assistance. I am sure they will more than give assistance,” she said.
