Amber Group acquires 50% equity in OnTime Taxi

KINGSTON, Jamaica — In a move to redefine the public passenger vehicle (PPV) industry, Amber Group has acquired a 50 per cent equity in OnTime Taxi, one of the nation’s most reputable taxi services, which will now be rebranded as AmberOnTime.

In a press release on Tuesday, the group said this strategic partnership aims to transform the market by integrating advanced apps with innovative artificial intelligence (AI) features, enhancing user experience and safety standards.

It said that for the first time ever in the PPV industry, all OnTime Taxis will be equipped with physical panic buttons for passengers with armed security response. The platform will be backed by Amber Connect’s real-time tracking with AI enabled route and dispatch management functions.

Advanced AI dashcams will also allow superior driver behaviour monitoring, promote safer driving habits, and help reduce the likelihood of accidents, thereby lowering insurance premiums for operators, the group said. This focus on safety and efficiency not only will enhance the passenger experience but also will support increased financial health of taxi operators, it added.

Speaking on the partnership, Amber Group’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dushyant Savadia said, “This partnership is a transformative leap for the local PPV market. By integrating our advanced tech solutions with OnTime Taxis operational prowess, we are not only enhancing safety but also demonstrating the power and potential of local businesses. I chose to make this move now because the PPV industry urgently needs support, and it’s time for Jamaican people to have access to advanced taxi technology. Our goal is to make all these innovations available to the entire PPV industry in Jamaica and level the playing field with overseas operators.”

Likewise, OnTime Taxi’s CEO Phillip Fearon shared that, “Both Amber and OnTime are incredibly strong brands individually, and together, we’re poised to disrupt the industry and deliver unparalleled service to our passengers and enhance safety levels like never before. By equipping OnTime Taxi with cutting-edge technology, Amber Group is demonstrating that local companies can compete head-to-head with global entities operating in Jamaica.”

The group said this alliance is not just a business transaction but is a statement.

“Our solutions ensure compliance with local laws and a deep understanding of the Jamaican market, coupled with genuine care for the community. This partnership is a bold step towards showcasing the capability and resilience of Jamaican businesses in the face of external competition,” it said.
