Funcaandun gallops away with She’s A Maneater Trophy
In a thrilling performance, Funcaandun, trained by Jason DaCosta, came from behind runners to win the fourth edition of the $1.75-million She’s A Maneater Trophy with ease, the highlight of Saturday’s 10-race event.
Despite carrying a relatively light weight of (46.0kg) 101lb, the three-year-old American-bred colt demonstrated exceptional class, talent, and determination, cruising to a dominant seven-and-three-quarter lengths victory in the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance race for three-year-olds and upward.
Funcaandun (Klimt – Fiftyshadesoffun) completed the one-mile (1,600m) course in an impressive time of 1:39.0, beating stablemate Mamma Mia (Ramon Nepare) and Horse of the Year Atomica (Omar Walker). Both Funcaandun and Mamma Mia are owned by Carlton Watson.
With Jordan Barrett in the saddle, Funcaandun broke off well behind runners at the start that saw him trailing the pack from second to last position in the six-horse field.
Mamma Mia showed the way ahead of Atomica, Further and Beyond (Raddesh Roman), and Big Big Daddy (Natalie Berger) down the backstretch.
Approaching the half-mile (800m) turn, Funcaandun seized the moment to launch his move, deftly slipping into third place behind Mamma Mia and Atomica. With momentum now on his side, he joined the front-runners at the top of the stretch and then unleashed a blistering sprint to cross the wire an easy winner.
It was the second winner on the day for DaCosta and Barrett on the day.
DaCosta later saddled Chocomo (Robert Halledeen) in the $1.25-million Donald Wehby Sr Trophy, a Restricted Overnight Allowance event for three-year-olds and upward over five furlongs (1,000m) straight.
Chocomo won by a length and three-quarters ahead of stablemate Digital One in 1:00.2.
Barrett had guided home Storm A Come in the fourth race for trainer Patrick Lynch. Lynch then saddled Lion Charmer (Tevin Foster) in the ninth race for his double.
Leading rider Tevin Foster also had two winners in addition to Lion Charmer. Foster booted home Matriarch for trainer Cashbert Khawlsingh in the opening race.
Racing continues on Thursday, Emancipation Day. The Jamaica Oaks and Derby Classic races are scheduled for Saturday (August 3), and Tuesday (August 6), respectively.
