AvCom a backbone of local technology systems and public safety

With almost 40 years of experience, Aviation Communications Jamaica Limited (AvCom JA) has for more than a decade delivered First-World technology solutions to drive local business growth and economic development, standing as a backbone of Jamaica’s public safety.

A specialist in the industry, the company now provides services for large clients such as Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), National Housing Trust, Jamaica Public Service (JPS), and Urban Development Corporation (UDC), among many others.

Founded in the Cayman Islands in 1982, its Jamaican operations began in December 2013 following the successful vision of four of its locally bred directors who all have first-hand knowledge and experience in the information technology (IT) and telecommunication’s industry.

Initially starting out as a supplier of telecommunication equipment and services for the aviation industry, AvCom has throughout the years steadily expanded its slate of products and services, now catering to the needs of a more diverse client base spread across a range of industries including government, utilities, security, telecommunications, tourism, transportation and much more.

“We are a consulting and implementing organisation that provides information and communications technology, specialising in the development and delivery of optimal technology solutions. Some of the products we offer include two-way radio communication systems and infrastructure services, security video surveillance, access control security, data centre solutions, perimeter intrusion detection system, aeronautical communication, video analytics, lightning protection, grounding and surge suppression, queue management system and wireless solutions,” CEO Errington Davy said in detailing the company’s operations.

“AvCom JA is focused on providing the highest-quality solutions with the most budget-friendly options for our customer. We recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all solution that meets every client’s need, and as such we make every effort to personalise all our projects to suit the unique needs of our clients. Our goal is simply to provide a return on investment for our customers, offering them cost-effective solutions that support strategic goals and heightened efficiency as we eliminate risks and initiate industry trends,” he added.

Now working with a growing number of international distribution partners including Motorola, Plate Smart Technologies Cisco, Salto, Dell, Axis Communications and others, the company provides highly tailored IT designs and a wide range of management and support services.

“Our projects locally include a long list of services which we have implemented islandwide, such as licence plate recognition for the Government of Jamaica’s video surveillance network, Jamaica Eye. We also provide highly secured environments with closed-circuit television systems (CCTVs) at locations such as the UDC Harmony Beach Park in Montego Bay, St James, and we are a major supplier for radio communication solutions for the local police and military forces. Over the years AvCom’s successes have continued with our successful implantation of the first Cisco hyper-converged solution locally as well as our delivery of wireless solutions support which have enabled smart checkpoints for the JCF,” Davy said.

Satisfied with the level of support it has been able to offer national security systems, the Kingston-based company prides it work on the Jamaica Eye project — which utilises digital imagery to detect and deter criminal activity — among that of which it is most proud.

“While we consider all our projects to be major achievements we consider Jamaica Eye as having the most impact islandwide — this as with the technology offered the Government has been able to significantly increase the country’s public safety measures through surveillance,” the CEO stated.

Deploying the latest generation of CCTV solutions which leverage current networking technology and high-resolution security cameras, AvCom is also a local distributor of security access control systems (SACS).

“We are an authorised dealer and channel partner for Isonas Security Systems, which offers the best in the technology of SACS,” the company’s website noted.

“We understand the concerns for security and know the value of peace of mind, therefore we put high priority on our security-related and public safety systems,” it continued.

In offering long-term local support the company said it remains committed to providing guaranteed post-implementation services where the need arises, taking pride in satisfying the project needs of clients while “delivering a memorable experience”.

“Our team uses some of the most proven implementation processes that we have developed and fine-tuned over the years to ensure the timeliness and quality of our work,” the website added.

Powered by a well-rounded and experienced staff complement of telecommunication experts, the team comprises a number of technical and network specialists; software developers; engineers, hardware engineers; structured cabling providers; system integrators; certified trainers; project managers; as well as sales, marketing and administrative personnel.

Continuously expanding its portfolio of products and services over the decade, the company said it is now taking steps to improve in the area of video analytics as it pushes to keep up with global advancements in technology.

Its video analytics solutions help clients protect and provide business intelligence by automatically detecting security and safety incidents, as it monitors customer traffic while providing forensic search tools for situational awareness and post-event analysis.

“Examples of this type of solution include facial recognition, motion detection, people-counting, licence plate recognition, among others,” the company said.

The push to expand not just its suite of products but also its service to other parts of the region and further its expansion to new territories, the company’s CEO said, remains a very big part of its plans for the future.

“Broadening our presence in the region and creating more strategic partnerships, we think, will further help to enhance our already very big footprint,” Davy said.

Working with local clients such as JCF, the large technology services provider said it has implemented robust and reliable licence plate recognition solutions for both government and private entities throughout the island of Jamaica.
