Mahogany the choice in Poorlittlerichgirl Trophy
The running of the $1.4-million Poorlittlerichgirl Trophy, an Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward, takes centre stage on tomorrow’s nine race card.
The well-decorated Mahogany takes on four rivals in what should be an exciting battle for supremacy going 7 furlongs (1,400m).
Below, the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a look at each runner and their chances of winning.
1. THALITA: (4 ch f by Soul Warrior – Luminous Trieste) – Is riding a wave of momentum after her win on July 7. Thalita demonstrated her speed and agility by edging out Perfect Brew by half a length over 6 ½ furlongs (1,400m) at the Overnight Allowance level in a time of 1:20.0. This victory marked her first win of the season, and she’s expected to build on this success. Thalita is expected to run well.
2. MAHOGANY: (7 ch g by Sensational Slam – Mete-Orite) – Shouldn’t be underestimated because of his age. He may have finished fourth to Mamma Mia,
Funcaandun, and Easy as ABC on July 7, but the shorter distance of 7 furlongs (1,400m) could play to his advantage. With the expertise of Shane Ellis, the 2024 Jamaica Derby-winning jockey, in the saddle, Mahogany is poised to turn the tables and dominate the field. His strong training and experience make him a formidable contender, and he’s likely to be a strong challenger for the top spot. Blinkers on.
3. EASY AS ABC (USA): (4 b c by Arrogate – Belle Chloe) – Had two-race his winning streak snapped on July 7 when he finished third behind Mamma Mia and Funcaandun over 7 ½ furlongs. Despite the setback, he’s well-suited for the 7-furlong distance and should again be competitive. Notably, he finished ahead of Mahogany on July 7, and with his comfort level at this distance, he’s likely to replicate that performance. Easy as ABC is a strong contender who shouldn’t be overlooked.
4. YELLOWSTONE: (5 ch g by Sensational Slam – Awry) – Is a good sprinter, but the 7-furlong distance might be a bit challenging for him, especially against this competitive field. While he has shown promise in shorter sprints, Yellowstone may struggle to maintain his pace over the longer distance. However, he’s still a contender who could surprise if he finds a way to conserve his energy and finish strong. Note: Visor off.
5. MADELYN’S SUNSHUNE (USA): (5 dk b/br m by Joe’s Son Joey – Madelyn’s Finest) – Is coming off a half-length win over 5½ furlongs (1,100m) on August 3. While she’s in good form, repeating her success in this contest will be a challenging task. The step up to 7 furlongs may prove daunting, as she’s yet to demonstrate her endurance over longer distances. Additionally, the competition in this field is stiff, with several contenders boasting stronger credentials. Madelyn’s Sunshine will need to dig deep to find extra reserves of speed and stamina if she’s to have any chance of upsetting the favourites.
