Mouttet Mile next for Barbosa
US rider sets sights on December’s premier event after successful Jamaica debut
Jeiron Barbosa, the visiting rider from Laurel Park racetrack in Maryland, United States, made a stellar debut on local soil on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, and he’s already hooked.
Barbosa’s day was already looking busy, with four rides locked in on the 11-race card. But fate had other plans, and he suddenly found himself with an extra mount in the opening event — the Robert Pearson-conditioned Rani Bangala. Originally, Robert Halledeen was slated to ride the mare, but Barbosa seized the opportunity with both hands.
As the gates burst open, Barbosa held Rani Bangala in mid-pack, coaxing the five-year-old to produce a telling effort in the stretch. Rani Bangala responded by surging forward to edge out Bern Notice (Tevin Foster) by a half-length on the wire. The crowd erupted in cheers as Barbosa celebrated his unexpected win, his skills and adaptability on full display.
The race was a three-year-old and upward Claiming ($1m-$800,000) event over 6 ½ furlongs.
With the thrill of his first win still fresh, Barbosa revealed his plans to return for another exciting experience, with the coveted Mouttet Mile firmly in his sights. The Mouttet Mile is slated for December.
“The experience and accommodation have been top-notch,” Barbosa gushed.
“I’ve felt so welcome here, and the racing has been incredible. I can’t wait to come back and do it all again. Maybe I will come back for the big race you guys have here in December, the Mouttet Mile. Yeah, I will be back here; I will definitely come back,” Barbosa told the
Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Commenting on the performance from both him and Rani Bangala, Barbosa said: “It felt amazing. I wasn’t supposed to ride that horse, I don’t know, maybe my agent picked up that mount. So, thank you to my agent, thank you to the people involved and who invited me. I am very excited.
“The first part of the race, she didn’t want to come but in the straight I asked her and she responded. She is a super nice horse.”
According to US website Equibase, Barbosa has a career record of 419 wins, 394 seconds, and 378 thirds from 2,434 mounts with lifetime earnings of US$14,810,173.
“My career has been amazing. I am very happy and happy when I am winning races,” he said.
