Midnight Flight soars to victory in Restricted Allowance contest
Following Midnight Flight’s impressive win on Saturday, August 10, 2024, trainer Byron Davis indicated that once his three-year-old grey filly breaks off well at the start of any race, she will be very competitive.
Ridden by Tevin Foster, Midnight Flight made one move to win a Restricted Allowance II contest for native-bred three-year-olds (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-olds (maidens) over 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight.
Midnight Flight (Midnight Hawk – Honeymoon Bay) won by 5¼ lengths beating
Prince Amaan (Omar Walker) and Pope’s Lady (Raddesh Roman) in a time of 59.3 (23.3 x 46.3).
“I prepared this horse for this race. She cannot get a distance of ground that’s why she didn’t run in the Classic races,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Guide.
“Her furthest journey is six to six and furlongs. She might catch seven furlongs, at tops. She is more of a sprinting. From she broke well at the start with the field, she is going to run well.
“She has been missing the break recently and even in her last race, she missed the break and circled the horses but nothing was left in the tank to take her home. “I changed up her training and this is the result,” he added.
It was the filly’s first success since opening her career-winning account on debut, March 23, 2024.
Davis was overjoyed with the result, praising Midnight Flight’s potential.
“This filly is a good one in the making. We’ve worked hard to overcome her issues, and it’s rewarding to see her perform like this. Running under one minute over the straight is a positive sign,” he said.
Davis credited Foster for a well-executed ride, saying, “I told him to focus on getting a good break, which has been an issue for her. He did just that, and the result speaks for itself.”
As to what the future holds for Midnight Flight and his barn, Davis was optimistic.
“At present, I have 13 horses in my stables. Midnight Flight and Cryptogirl are the two best-known to the racing public.
“Midnight Flight and Cryptogirl have reached the non-three level, and truthfully, I expect both to go through her conditions and reach Overnight Allowance, but from there, you don’t know what will happen. Only time will tell,” Davis said.
He added: “As to the other horses in the stables, there is a lot of potential, but time is the master.”
