Reggae Boyz beat Nicaragua 2-0 to take group lead in Nations League
Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz took over the lead in Group B of the Concacaf Nations League A after a comfortable 2-0 win over Nicaragua in their top-of the-table game played at the national stadium in Managua on Thursday.
A first half own goal and a second half tap in from Romario Williams saw the Reggae Boyz improve to seven points, one more than Honduras who beat French Guiana 3-0 earlier in the day.
The loss snapped Nicaragua’s 14-game unbeaten run in the Nations League as the Central American side slipped to third in the group on four points.
Jamaica took the lead in the 32nd minute when Nicaraguan defender Josue Quijano inadvertently fumbled a cross from Bobby Reid over his own goal line.
Williams, who had missed a wide open header early in the first half, put the Jamaicans up by two goals in the 69th minute when he was left unmarked at the far left post and tapped home a Greg Leigh glancing header, from a corner taken by Reid, which appeared to be heading into the net.
Coach Steve McClaren will be forced to make at least one change to the starting team against Honduras on Monday at the National Stadium in Kingston as central defender Damion Lowe will be suspended due to accumulated yellow cards after he was booked again in Thursday’s game.
