Campion confident of result against Mona
CAMPION College’s Technical Director Aston Blankson says they have nothing to fear as they prepare to take on defending champions Mona in Group A of the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup second round today at 2 pm. The game will be followed by the second matchup in the double-header at Ashenheim Stadium, with hosts Jamaica College (JC) facing Charlie Smith in Group D at 4:10 pm.
St Catherine leads Group D with three points, ahead of JC and Calabar who each have one point, while Charlie Smith has none. In the opening feature game Campion, one of this season’s surprise teams, started their second round with a 3-0 victory over many-time champions St George’s College at Winchester Park on Saturday. Mona, however, tops the group on goal difference after their 6-0 win over St Jago on Friday at Stadium East.
Today’s encounter could be an exciting contest as both teams employ a similar attacking style. Campion have netted 33 goals in this season while conceding 10. Mona have scored 68 goals while conceding a mere three. Blankson acknowledged the challenge ahead but is optimistic about securing a positive result.
“We have gone up against some tough teams already this season so we know the quality that Mona has, and we are ready to compete against them on Tuesday,” he said. “There are some adjustments that we will have to make, based on the way Mona plays and their personnel, but as far as we are concerned we want to play our game at Campion. We want to get the ball, create chances, and keep a clean sheet.”
Blankson says Mona is a well-rounded team with many quality players but he is confident that his team will rise to any challenges they may face today.
“I don’t think there are any easy games left; every game from here on is going to be tough so Mona will be a tough team,” he said. “We will be ready for the challenge.”
