KINGSTON, Jamaica — Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel emphasised that his allegiance is to all Jamaicans, regardless of their political affiliation.

Kartel made this statement in response to online commentary following his attendance at the annual conference of the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) in September this year.

Kartel clarified that his presence was solely to support his friend, Isat Buchanan, who was instrumental in securing his release through the Court of Appeal earlier this year.

Kartel, however, wants it to be clear that his loyalty is with the people of Jamaica, whether they identify as Labourites or Comrades.

Kartel further explained that he maintains cordial relations with members of the governing party, including West Portland Member of Parliament, Daryl Vaz, whose wife, Ann-Marie, is expected to face Buchanan in a bid for the East Portland seat.

In a social media post this week, Kartel shared what he described as a “pressing message”:

“I want people understand, the other day I go represent for Isat Buchanan because him a run inna him politics thing and a lot of people take it out of proportion, along political divide and we understand that because this is Jamaica, it is a politically harsh environment. But memba dis, Vybz Kartel first and foremost, my allegiance is to the people of Jamaica, whether you are PNP or Labourite, Vybz Kartel’s allegiance is to the people of Jamaica,” Kartel stated.

Widely regarded as Jamaica’s most popular living entertainer, Kartel says he promotes unity under the idea that there is one Jamaica.

“Me and Isat good, me and Daryl Vaz good. Me nuh know him wife but she looks like a cool lady to me. Big up Mrs. Vaz. The point me a make is me is an artiste and a businessman. Isat is a friend of mine, Daryl Vaz is a friend of mine. Me know him for years. Since 2008/2009. Don’t get it twisted. A one Jamaica me say, because wherever me go di yute dem ago lift me up, you know weh mi mean,” Kartel stated.
