The Jamaica Social Stock Exchange (JSSE) has launched a relief effort to assist Cuba, as the Spanish-speaking island struggles to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Rafael.

The category three storm battered the western end of the island causing a nationwide power blackout and serious damage in the capital Havana and other cities.

Managing Director of the Jamaica Stock Exchange Dr Marlene Street Forrest said: “Cuba is our closest neighbour and they have been badly affected by the storm. We must do something to help them so we are appealing to the public to give what they can. People are in need of food and clothing so the donations will go a long way in easing some of the hardships.”

In addition to cash, contributions can be made in goods including:

• Components for Cuba’s electrical energy system.
• Electrical equipment that works with solar modules or batteries.
• Dried food such as milk, grains, canned foods and wheat flour among others.
• Medicines and medical supplies.
• Consumer goods for the affected population including mattresses, clothes, household appliances, kitchen equipment.
• Building materials.

“Jamaicans are benevolent by nature, and we have been there, so we understand the challenges that the government and people of Cuba are facing. In these uncertain times we all have to be our brothers’ keeper and I’m certain that Jamaicans will step up and answer the call,” Dr Street-Forrest added.
