Sharpe vows to restore Jamaica’s horse racing glory
Solomon Sharpe, chairman of Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL), has expressed his unwavering commitment to restoring the country’s former glory in the sport.
Speaking at the post-position draw for the Mouttet Mile at the ROK Hotel on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Sharpe emphasised the importance of perseverance and collaboration in achieving this goal.
“I have learned in life that nothing comes easy, and I am a fighter,” Sharpe declared. “We’re going to continue to fight until we take this industry to its rightful position. Jamaica used to breed horses that were sent on ships to England to run in big races. Jamaica will see its glory days again very soon.”
Sharpe acknowledged the challenges faced by the industry, including internal conflicts and a lack of recognition for its participants. However, he expressed optimism that a newfound sense of unity and cooperation would propel the industry forward.
“We have had fights, and I think there are some in our industry that are tired of fighting,” Sharpe observed. “I think they have decided that it’s time for us to hold hands and take this thing to the next level. You have to celebrate your horsemen; you have to celebrate all your participants.”
In recognition of the contributions made by industry stakeholders, Sharpe announced that one of the lifetime racing achievement awards would be presented to the Don Wehby, senator and owner of Atomica.
Sharpe also expressed his gratitude to the Mouttet Family who has continued to support the industry through their sponsorship of the Mouttet Mile.
“This is going to be a fantastic year,” Sharpe predicted. “I want to thank everybody for helping us to get here. We can’t do this without the investment of the owners, the hard work of the trainers, jockeys, and the grooms. It’s a team effort, and we’re all in this together.”
