CLARENDON, Jamaica – Exams were pushed back on Monday morning at Garvey Maceo High School as students and staff celebrated their third ISSA daCosta Cup football title. Garvey Maceo defeated first-time finalist McGrath High 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw during the regular match time at the National Stadium.

In a spirited general assembly, business educator Jihan Morgan indicated that the championship was prophesised to come home to the ‘Cubanz’ – a moniker for affiliates of the school, which was donated by the Cuban Government and named after Jamaica’s first national hero Marcus Garvey and Cuban revolutionary Antonio Maceo.

“God proved himself as a man that is not slack concerning his promises. So, he had said at the beginning that the victory would have been for the Cubanz. And so every time we were to go out to play, we knew that we’d have to call upon the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords,” she shared in the morning’s meditation.

She said that Garvey-Maceo was considered the underdogs in the competition, but God kept His promise.

“Listen, the Lord went before this army. The Lord went before this army. And we have the victory. God plus one equals majority. So it doesn’t matter what another team looks like, how big they look, how gigantic they look, how fierce they look. With God before us, we were able to do it. And we will continue with God before us,” she said to loud cheers.

Garvey-Maceo will face 17-title Manning Cup champions Kingston College on Saturday for the Oliver Shield all-island title.
