Apprentice jockey Demar Williams shines again
DEMAR Williams, a rising star in the saddle, secured his second career win aboard
Kellan in the fourth race on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
The Donovan Hutchinson-conditioned Kellan took top honours in the maiden condition race for native-bred four-year-olds and upward over 6½ furlongs (1,300m).
Kellan, a four-year-old bay colt by Savoy Stomp – Distinctly Natural, dominated the competition, crossing the finishing line two lengths ahead of the pack in a time of 1:24.2 (24.2 x 49.2 x 1:17.2).
The race unfolded with Kellan breaking off in third place, trailing Ruby’s Light (Rotajmar Weir) and Linstead Market, ridden by Dane Dawkins, down the backstretch. However, as the field approached the half-mile (800m) turn Kellan maintained his steady pace, positioning himself for a thrilling finish.
In a heart-stopping finale Sheer De Jour made a bold move, surrounding horses at the top of the lane. But Williams expertly guided Kellan through the chaos, and the colt responded with a blistering run along the inside rails, securing the win.
Sheer De Jour took second place while Valley of Love finished third.
Williams’ impressive ride marked his second career victory, cementing his status as a talented young jockey to watch.
