BGLC urges unlicensed gaming operators to get regularised
KINGSTON, Jamaica- The Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) is urging operators of unlicensed gaming machines and locations to take advantage of its compliance drive to regularise their operations without penalties.
Speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank at the agency’s head office in Kingston on February 6, Director of Enforcement at the BGLC, Noel Bacquie, said that individuals have until June 30, 2025, to license their machines without any penalty once the application process has been completed successfully.
To obtain a gaming machine licence, operators and owners must first complete a fit and proper assessment. This involves a thorough review of an applicant’s character and capacity to conduct betting, gaming and lottery activities.
Other requirements include the submission of an application form, valid police record, credit report, proof of assets, educational history, and a valid Tax Compliance Certificate.
“I know that some of you may see licensing as just another cost or set of rules. In reality, it’s an investment in your business. Licensed operators enjoy the trust from their customers, protection from enforcement actions and the ability to grow their business without fear of shutdowns, fines or legal action,” said Bacquie.
He further informed that once the compliance drive ends, the BGLC will ramp up its enforcement efforts, and those who continue to operate illegally will face serious consequences, including “machine seizures, potential arrests and financial penalties”.
Despite these measures, Bacquie emphasised that the BGLC’s goal is to support operators through the process.
“We would rather work with you than against you. So, I urge you, take the necessary steps to license your machines. If you need guidance, we’re here to help,” he said.
“The benefits are real, the process is clear and the risk of non-compliance is far too great. Together, we can create a gaming industry that is responsible, profitable and built to last,” he continued.
