Student-athletes set for ‘unique experience’ with interactive school tour
As a former student-athlete, Jeanae Robinson understands the challenges high school students encounter while balancing their academics and preparing for the future. Now, she’s taking the initiative to ensure that modern-day student-athletes are better equipped for what lies ahead.
In January, Robinson announced the “Sports Girlie Tour”, set for February 21, which will engage student-athlete, primarily girls, at various high schools on the importance of personal branding, media representation, mental health and more.
Six schools have been confirmed including Kingston College, Jamaica College, Excelsior High, St Andrew High School for Girls and Queen’s High.
The 23-year-old sports content creator, who competed in track and field during her high school days, says the tour is her way of impacting youth through her own experiences.
“This is something that was ordained by God. I never really had any intention of doing a tour but definitely had the intention of giving back in some way, shape or form. I tossed the idea to very close people in my circle and it was just what some would say destined to happen,” Robinson said.
“It’s to give the athletes an alley or a voice to ask the questions and have resources to add in their respective careers.”
Ambassadors and speakers for the tour include Olympic finalist and national 100m hurdles record holder Ackera Nugent, Olympic silver medallist Kemba Nelson, Reggae Girlz team manager Crystal Walters and Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Marketing Manager Avery Campbell.
Robinson says the experience the student-athletes will gain will be extremely valuable as they move forward in life.
“I believe The Sports Girlie Tour benefits student-athletes by enhancing their athletic skills, boosting confidence, and fostering personal growth. It exposes them to new competition, improves discipline, and provides networking opportunities. Through teamwork, leadership, and resilience, athletes gain valuable life skills that extend beyond sports,” she said.
The tour’s main topics are the power of sport, breaking stereotypes, building your brand and mental health and resilience.
