KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Digicel Foundation has launched its Safer Internet Together (SIT) programme, a year-long initiative aimed at promoting online safety and digital responsibility for Jamaicans of all ages.

The programme was officially launched on February 11, 2025, at the Mona School of Business and Management at the University of the West Indies to mark Safer Internet Day.

Under the theme “Together, For A Better Internet”, the SIT programme will focus on online safety, digital literacy and cyber awareness in collaboration with 150 educational institutions across the island.

The initiative is being rolled out in partnership with the Ministry of Education, STEM Builders Learning Hub, United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Sunshine Snacks, Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), and MacMillan Education.

Specialised sessions will also be conducted in September for older adults during Senior Citizens’ Month to help them recognise and protect themselves from online threats.

Digicel Group Chief Executive Officer, Marcelo Cataldo said the programme aims to help Jamaicans, especially young children, navigate the digital space safely.

“Our responsibility at Digicel is to work together to help the new generation be safe and protected,” he said.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police Leonardo Brown, who presented at the launch, reminded participants that online activity leaves a permanent digital footprint.

“The internet and connectivity never forgets; whatever you post remains somewhere,” he said.

An audience member, Christoph Tucker, highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting that with the widespread use of tablets by children, ensuring their online safety is crucial.

The programme is expected to raise awareness and foster a culture of responsible digital citizenship, ensuring that Jamaicans can explore the online world safely and confidently.
