Shortwood gears up for week-long fundraising activities to support robotics programme

The Shortwood Past Students Association will host a week of activities, from May 12 to 18, to raise funds for the robotics programme at the Shortwood Practising School.

“Proceeds will directly benefit the robotics programme and we invite all past students to join us in supporting this vital initiative by attending one or more of the scheduled events,” Walbert Clarke, the association’s president, said in a statement.

The week of activities will begin with a three-day relaxation and rejuvenation retreat at the Royalton Blue Waters Resort in Montego Bay, St James.

The next phase will be filled with an array of engaging activities, Clarke said. He said that participants and supporters will enjoy a benefit performance of the National Pantomine season’s play, Channel 876. He said that other events will include a barbecue luncheon, a dinner cruise aboard the Loose Cannon, a meet and greet gala and a church service.

The week of activities will conclude with a grand gala honouring beloved past teacher, June Morgan. Distinguished alumnus, Michael Duncan will be the keynote speaker at the grand gala event.

“For over 33 years, the Shortwood Past Students Association has been dedicated to uplifting the school community, particularly focusing on providing providing students with essential resources such as laptops, tablets and library books. This year, we are proud to spotlight our growing robotics programme, which encourages students to pursue STEM fields through hands-on competitions and innovative challenges.

“Shortwood practising School continues to thrive as a leader in post-primary education, consistently producing students who are well equipped for the future. This fundraising week will not only provide a platform for alumni and friends to reconnect but also to learn about the school’s recent accomplishments and achievements,” Clarke said.

In 2024 the Shortwood Past Students Association offered sponsorship support which allowed the school to participate in its second robotics competition, upgrade its canteen with new exhaust burners and complete the remodeling of a chicken coop that provides meals for students.
