Mason Greenwood formally requests international switch to Jamaica – English FA

Mason Greenwood has formally requested to switch his international allegiance to Jamaica, ruling out any future appearances for England, according to Football Association (FA) chief executive Mark Bullingham.

As reported by The Athletic, Greenwood, 23, has not played for England since his debut against Iceland in September 2020. His decision to switch was first reported last August. Under FIFA regulations, players who made senior appearances before turning 21 can change their national affiliation if they meet eligibility requirements.

Bullingham, speaking with selected media including The Athletic, confirmed the request.

“My understanding is he (Greenwood) has asked to switch. That’s happened formally, so he wouldn’t be able to (be selected) because you can only switch once,” he said.

Currently playing for Marseille after leaving Manchester United in the summer for an initial €27.6 million (£23.1m; $29.8m) transfer, Greenwood has been in strong form, scoring 15 goals in 24 matches this season.

When asked whether Greenwood opted for Jamaica because he was no longer in England’s plans, Bullingham stated, “No, we actually didn’t have that communication. I know people asked Gareth (Southgate) about him and Gareth was upfront in that he hadn’t been in his thinking because he hadn’t been performing at that level, so I’m not aware of any communication we had with him. It’s a personal decision by him.”

Greenwood had not played for Manchester United since his January 2022 arrest. The club ultimately made him available for transfer after deciding not to reintegrate him into the first team. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case against him for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control in February 2023, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence that undermined the likelihood of conviction. Greenwood denied all allegations.
