Concerned at the lack of uplifting dancehall songs about women, Singer Irie and Power Man share the mic on Right Type of Lady, a single celebrating the females.

Produced by TM God Alone Production on the Tan Tan ‘riddim’, it was released in February. The collaboration was initiated by Singer Irie.

“It was Singer Irie’s idea, and I endorsed it to the fullest because it is celebrating the good women of our generation, and I love the ladies to my heart,” said Power Man, best known for the 1992 hit song, Stone.

Both artistes live in the tri-state area of the United States and correspond regularly. According to Singer Irie, they share the same opinion on a dearth of dancehall songs lauding women.

“The ladies that hear the song feel happy that dem have us to stand up for them musically. This song can play in homes, schools, on radio and in the offices of all the big heads of government,” he said.

Critics of dancehall music have criticised its sexist content for many years. In the 1980s, acts like Yellowman, Ninjaman and Shabba Ranks bore the brunt of those attacks.

It was during that era that Singer Irie launched his recording career as Patrick Irie. He had a change of moniker 10 years ago after relocating to the United States.

He and Power Man want to make a statement with Right Type of Lady.

“The message behind this song is, how most artists nowadays keep bringing down women and we know that women play a very important part in a man’s life, and the respect we have for our mothers. We both know that when you find the right woman it’s your greatest joy and happiness,” said Singer Irie.
