NCAA Indoors: Jerome Campbell runs third fastest 60m hurdles by a Jamaican

Jerome Campbell of the University of Northern Colorado lowered his personal best for the second straight day as he clocked 7.49 seconds for second in the men’s 60m hurdles at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

A day after he ran 7.54 seconds in the preliminaries, Campbell became the joint third fastest Jamaican over the event and lowered his own school and Big Sky records in the process.

Campbell, who was named as part of the Jamaican team to next weekend’s World Athletics World Indoor Championships in China, joins former Commonwealth Games champion Ronald Levy in the number three spot, only behind national record holder Omar McLeod (7.41 seconds) and Maurice Wignall (7.48 seconds).

Jaheim Stern of Louisiana State University was fifth in a personal best 7.55 seconds, joint second in his school history and tied for ninth on the Jamaican rankings. Vashaun Vascianna of the University of Arkansas was eighth in 7.64 seconds.

Dejanae Oakley of the University of Georgia and Oneka Wilson of Clemson were third in the women’s 400m and 60m hurdles respectively while Luke Brown of the University of Kentucky was fourth in the men’s triple jump.

Oakley ran 51.14 seconds for third in the 400m while Wilson, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champion, was third in the 60m hurdles in 7.99 seconds.

Last year’s runner-up in the men’s triple jump, Brown was fourth this time around with 16.33m while Shantae Foreman of Clemson University – who finished 12th a year ago – was fifth in the women’s triple jump with 13.63m.
Rhianna Phipps of the University of Nebraska was 13th with 12.98m followed by Machaeda Linton of LSU, 12.93m, and Nia Robinson of the University of Arkansas who was 16th with 12.78m.
Travis Williams of the University of Southern California repeated his fifth place finish in the men’s 60m, running a season’s best 6.54 seconds, while Shaemar Uter of Texas Tech University was sixth in the men’s 400m in 46.20 seconds.

Niesha Burgher of the University of Texas- El Paso (UTEP) was also sixth in the women’s 200m in 22.84 seconds.

Shenese Walker of Florida State University (FSU) placed seventh in the women’s 60m in 7.27 seconds while defending champion Brianna Lyston of LSU did not show up for the final.

Demar Francis of Baylor ran 21.00 seconds for seventh in the men’s 200m and Ralford Mullings of the University of Oklahoma was 13th in the men’s shot put with 18.16m.
