Green Island’s Colstock eyes Championships hurdles medal

Green Island High’s Daynea Colstock will be a long shot for a medal in the Girls’ Open 400m hurdles at the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships but she is not betting against herself.

The championships is set to start at the National Stadium on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old was 13th overall last year to miss the final at Champs, and finished 2024 with a best of 1:02.09 minutes. She has gradually lowered her times this season to 59.37 seconds and thinks she is ready to climb the medal podium.

“I have been working hard so far this year, I am stronger, more confident and I have improved my technique as well,” said Colstock, who won the Class 1 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles Open during the County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) Western Champs.

She has delivered the goods at most of her events so far, retaining her title with 1:01.59 at Western Relays on February 8 at G C Foster College. She then beat the experienced Rhianna Lewis of Rhodes Hall with 1:00.57 a week later at the COCAA Western Champs, also at G C Foster College.

She was third at the Carifta Trial in early March, running her lifetime best. The Green Island athlete said her confidence is high.

“I believe in my coach and he believes in me and I have no doubt that I will be able to at last get to the finals at Champs,” Colstock said.
