Government reviewing new US tariffs — Johnson Smith

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator Kamina Johnson Smith says the government has taken note of the new tariffs announced by United States (US) President Donald Trump on Wednesday on trading partners.

“The Government of Jamaica has taken note of the new tariff regime announced yesterday by the president of the United States of America. We are obtaining the requisite technical documentation to ensure the accuracy of details and appropriate analysis. Please be assured that we appreciate the public’s need for further information and clarity and will update the business community and the wider public accordingly,” Johnson Smith said in a post on X Thursday morning.

Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that he would impose sweeping tariffs ranging from 34 per cent on imports from China and 20 per cent on imports from the European Union.

Exports from Jamaica to the United States will now attract a 10 per cent tariff as US President Donald Trump imposed charges on imports to the North American country from countries around the world.

The White House listed the tariff on Jamaica as “reciprocal” in response to a 10 per cent tariff Jamaica imposes on goods imported into the island from the US.
