Veteran Mahogany delivers masterclass performance in Easter Sprint Cup
THE win in the $1.25-million Easter Sprint Cup feature at Caymanas Park on Monday, April 21, 2025 was a testament to Mahogany’s enduring legacy which has been marked by numerous highlights, achievements, and setbacks.
At eight-years-old Mahogany, trained by Ian Parsrad and ridden by apprentice jockey Tajay Suckoo, continued to defy age with his speed, grit, and determination. He crossed the finishing line 1¾ lengths ahead of Unbelievable Force, ridden by Raddesh Roman, and Fearless Soul, with Eric Haughton aboard.
Despite competing in an Overnight Allowance event Mahogany proved he still has what it takes to be with the best in racing, dominating the field over 5½ furlongs (1,100m) with a final time of 1:06.1. Mahogany recorded splits of 23.3, 47.2, and 59.3.
Parsard praised Mahogany’s performance, saying: “It was a very good performance by Mahogany and a very, very good ride by the apprentice Suckoo.”
Parsard also revealed that Mahogany’s future plans will be determined by his well-being, prioritising his health above all else.
“I think with Mahogany it’s day by day, frankly. I mean, we don’t want to make a long-range plan for Mahogany. I think for him, he has done so well for us that his well-being is number one, so we will assess him. If he stays sound and can be competitive, we will run him but if not, he goes to retirement,” Parsard revealed to the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Parsard expressed gratitude for Mahogany’s contributions to his stable, highlighting his fantastic career and notable achievements.
“Mahogany has been fantastic. He has lost a couple of tough battles, you know, big races where he possibly could have won them — the 2000 Guineas and the Diamond Mile, when we used to have that. He has been so fantastic for us. My son Peter-John was the one who picked him out for us from he was a baby and Mahogany has done amazingly and we have nothing to complain about, very happy to have him,” reasoned Parsard.
Mahogany competed well, battling for the lead with She’s That Girl, ridden by Jordan Barrett, and Unbelievable Force. As the field approached the half-mile turn Mahogany assumed a slim lead over Unbelievable Force, while She’s That Girl began to fade.
Unbelievable Force drew alongside Mahogany approaching the distance, and the two horses turned for home locked in a fierce battle. However, Tajay Suckoo expertly guided Mahogany, keeping him well-balanced on the inside. In the final furlong (200m) Mahogany found another gear, drawing off convincingly. Despite being outrun by Mahogany, Unbelievable Force still managed a solid finish, securing the exacta spot.
Mahogany has now won 19 races, finished second eight times, and placed third five times from 37 starts, with lifetime earnings of over $20.3 million.
