GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) -The lawyer representing the family of 11-year-old Adriana Younge, whose body was found in a pool at Double Day Hotel, Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo in Guyana last Thursday, said Monday night that she had died by drowning.

“Based on the findings, they determined that she died by drowning,” attorney Darren Wade told a virtual news briefing.

“The pathologists conducted a meticulous and comprehensive examination. In fact, they went beyond the standard procedures typically followed in such cases,” he added.

Subrian Younge, the child’s father, has confirmed the result of the forensic autopsy, saying that the pathologists have informed him and her mother, Amecia Simon, that she died by drowning.

“They say is drowning… and to me that is no result,” he said.

The autopsy was conducted by Dr Glenn A Rudner, a forensic pathologist from the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York along with Dr Shubhakar Karra Paul, the government-appointed international pathologist from Barbados, as well as Dr Gary L Collins, chief medical rxaminer for the State of Delaware, who was chosen by Younge’s family to represent their interests.

Family doctor, Dr Caleb McCloggan, also witnessed the autopsy that took at least four hours.

“They worked in tandem…From untrained eye, they did a thorough examination,” Wade added.

Concerning the dark marks on the face and limbs on Younge’s body, the lawyer said the forensic pathologists explained that it was a result of damage caused by the water. He said the pathologists did not find any broken bones, and they did not determine any inflicted injuries to the body.

He said the body had started to decompose.

Wade told reporters there was no determination about where she drowned, adding that the forensic pathologists “did not observe cotton wool at that stage” during the examination.

Wade said the family continues to press the state for an “independent and impartial investigation” and that he hoped that the Guyana government would accede to the family’s request for the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to conduct a probe.

“I believe it is critical at this point in time for the family and the entire country that the state acts; that the President (Irfaan Ali) doesn’t just talk but he delivers based on that promise to the family,” he said

President Ali is expected to hold a news conference later on Monday night.
