Williams, Thompson and Scott place second at Diamond League meet

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaicans Danielle Williams, Kishane Thompson and Jordan Scott were all second in their respective events at Saturday’s Wanda Diamond League meeting in Shanghai/Keqiao, China, the second stop on the 14-meet circuit.

Williams, who won the 100m hurdles at last weekend’s opening meet in Xiamen, clocked 12.55 seconds behind American Grace Stark, who ran a meeting record 12.42 seconds, lowering her world lead in the process, while South Africa’s Marione Fourie equalled her season’s best 12.62 seconds for third.

Stark, who was second last weekend, broke the previous record of 12.50 seconds set in 2018 by American Brianna McNeal.

Thompson, the Olympic Games silver medallist, opened his 100m season with 9.99 seconds with his MVP Track Club training partner Rohan Watson placing sixth with a season’s best of 10.18 seconds.

South Africa’s Akani Simbine, who chased and caught Thompson at the finish line, won in 9.98 seconds.

Meanwhile, Scott jumped 17.00m (0.3m/s) in the third round to move from fifth place and finished behind Portugal’s Pedro Pichardo — 17.03m (0.1m/s), with China’s Yaming Zhu placing third with 16.92m (0.3m/s).

Wayne Pinnock was third in the men’s long jump with 8.10m (0.5m/s) and Tajay Gayle was fifth with 8.05m (-0.1m/s) as China’s Yuhao Shi won with 8.21m (0.2m/s), just ahead of his compatriot Heng Shu- 8.18m (0.4m/s).

Olympic medallist Rasheed Broadbell lowered his season’s best to 13.24 seconds (-0.6m/s) to place third in the 110m hurdles; Hansle Parchment was sixth in 13.32 seconds and Orlando Bennett was eighth in 13.49 seconds.

American Cordell Tinch ran a personal best, world lead and meeting record of 12.87 seconds to win, beating the previous meet record of 12.97 seconds set in 2012 by Liu Xiang of China.

Natoya Goule-Toppin was fourth in the women’s 800m running a season’s best 1:58.43 as Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma ran a national record, meet record and world-leading 1:56.64.

Duguma broke the meet record of 1:58.58 set by Morocco’s Hansa Benhassi.

Australia’s Sarah Billings was second in a personal best of 1:57.83 and Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi was third in a season’s best of 1:58.39.

Danniel Thomas-Dodd was ninth in the women’s shot put with 18.21m as American Chase Jackson broke the meet record of 20.23m set by Lijiao Gong of China in 2015 when she threw 20.54m.
