AFTER almost five decades since its formation, legendary reggae group Mystic Revealers is still on a mission to spread positive messages through its music.

Lead vocalist Billy Mystic explained that a tour, as well as multiple tracks set for release, are in the works.

“We’re going to continue to do great music. We believe in music with a message, because the message that we put out is important to us and that is what it’s all about. Right now, we’re looking to go on tour, and we have quite a few unrecorded material plus some of the music that we had produced previously… when we reflect, it seems as if our music is even more relevant in these times. It has stood the test of time in terms of the lyrics and the message. If there’s a reward, so may it be, but the reward for us is being a handy tool in the hands of the Almighty to send out His word in the world,” he said.

He added: “Jah calls upon the youth because they are strong.”

To that end, Billy Mystic shares that the band is again sharing its energy and platform with two emerging acts — Ky-enie King and Dahvid Slur.

Mystic Revealers formed in the late 1970s in Bull Bay.

The band’s founding members are still its core – Billy Mystic, whose given name is Billy Wilmot; bass guitarist Leroy “Lion” Edwards; and drummer Nicholas “Rimshatt” Henry, who joined the group in the late 80s.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 the band released its Jah Jah People album, which features powerful tracks that are consistent with the Mystic Revealers sound and message, including songs such as Blue Nile, Businessman, and Just Can’t Deny It.

The band was, at one point, signed to the Washington DC-based Ras Records as well as Mesa Bluemoon Records, an affiliate of Atlantic Records.

According to Billy Mystic, that partnership played a pivotal role in the group’s progress.

“They were able to assist us not only with putting the music out there, but assisting with touring and that sort of thing. It also gave us a certain level of legitimacy in the industry because Ras Records was a major label at the time,” he reasoned.

Having toured the world with the rest of the group and maintained a positive presence in the music industry, Billy Mystic explained that his musical process is organic.

“Usually, when I write a song I see my guitar and I feel like I want to pick it up. As a musician, sometimes you start to fool around with some chords, and you stumble across a certain progression of chords and within the notes between those chords and how they work together, you might be able to pick out a melody that sounds appealing. By humming that melody Jah starts to send the lyrics that will fill that melody. So, it’s almost as if I’m just playing the accompaniment and listening to what Jah is going to suggest,” he said.

Besides his long-standing music career Billy Mystic was also known for his role as CC in Jamaican drama series Royal Palm Estate.
