Third suspect involved in abduction of teacher in Hanover fatally shot by police

KINGSTON, Jamaica—A third suspect involved in the abduction of a teacher in Pell River, Hanover, on May 8, was fatally shot during a confrontation with police on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Omar Johnson of Ginger Hill, Hanover.

Reports are that about 9:45 pm on Wednesday, police were conducting an operation in Pell River when they encountered Johnson. A confrontation ensued, resulting in Johnson being shot. A 9mm pistol with six rounds of ammunition was seized at the scene.

Johnson was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Johnson was among a group of men who, on May 8, forcibly removed a teacher from her vehicle in Pell River and took her to another location within the community. The teacher was rescued by the police on the same day.

During the initial rescue operation on May 8, two other men, 21-year-old Kevin Gordon and 27-year-old Christopher Williams, were fatally shot during a confrontation with the police.

Johnson had reportedly escaped at that time.

The incident was reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) and the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB).
