ST ANDREW, Jamaica — Emerging dancehall artiste D Blackz is pumped up about the enthusiastic street reaction to his latest single, ‘Muhammad Ali’.

“The feedback has been amazing; people say it’s powerful and motivational. The song was inspired by fighting through struggles, like how Ali fought in the ring. I wanted to create something to inspire others to believe in themselves no matter what,” the artiste whose real name is Oshane Spaulding, shared.

“It really connected with people because of the powerful message and energy,” he added.

D Blackz recently shot a video for the song, which is arguably his most popular song to date, with scenes on McGregor Gully (Gullyside) on Mannings Hill Road, St Andrew.

Born in Jamaica and raised in Maxfield Avenue, D Blackz migrated to the United Kingdom at age 13. He attended Geoffrey Chaucer College in London. He first got involved in the music business as a street dancer, Dancer Blackz, and he quickly developed a following who used to accompany him after school to dances.

When he began recording music, he rechristened himself, transforming his original community nickname to D Blackz. He started visiting studios and writing songs.

“I’ve always loved music since I was small, it was just about finding my way into it,” he explained.

He recorded his first song, ‘My Life’, which was released in 2010. It was inspired by his experiences growing up and the struggles of inner-city youth.

“It was rough growing up in Maxfield, there was always violence and conflict in the area. My upbringing was strict; my mum was young but always working hard to provide. I always looked up to her—she’s a real go-getter,” he said.

D Blackz has a clear vision for his music and sound which blends dancehall, reggae, UK grime, and street vibes.

“My alter ego, D Blackz, is bold, confident, and fearless on the mic—he says what’s on his mind. Oshane is more calm and quiet, but D Blackz brings the energy and voice of the streets. I represent ghetto youths, people with big dreams but no clear path. I’m the voice for the unheard, those who come from nothing but aim for everything,” D Blackz said.

The rising artiste is planning to tour the UK and also eyeing gigs in the Caribbean soon based on the rising popularity of his breakout song.

“I’m also working on a full EP to tell more of my story through music,” he said.
