Krispy Kreme fire shuts down all locations
ST ANDREW, Jamaica — All Krispy Kreme outlets locally have been shuttered for the day following a fire at the Waterloo location on Friday morning.
There were no reports of injuries in the incident.
“We don’t have any numbers or any additional information right now where we could quantify what the losses are. What I can say is that all Krispy Kreme outlets will be closed until further notice,” said Nadia Green, head of marketing and sales at Krispy Kreme operator Restaurants Associates Limited.
At 8:00 am the smell of smoke was still strong and acrid around the building though the exterior seemed unburnt. The damage was concentrated in the kitchen of the American donut chain, where a machine used to make the sweet treats was covered in soot and water.
The surrounding roof and tiles were blackened, with light fixtures melted from the ceiling onto the machine and other surrounding areas charred.
One of the signature glass windows next to the machine, which allowed customers to see the donut making process, had exploded while another was cracked.
The blaze had started while an employee prepared for opening, Green explained, adding that the worker was taken to hospital as a precaution.
“The reports indicate that no one was injured as a result of the fire specifically but just out of an abundance of caution, we’re making sure that, you know, we get medical treatment and medical assessment to make sure everything is fine,” she said.
Employees who arrived after the fire for work milled around the parking lot and donuts had been rolled outside on the trays under covers with the signature Krispy Crème green.
Since all the treats are made at the Waterloo Road location, the fire shuttered all operations.
Firefighters are still working to ascertain the cause of the fire and other details.
