When it’s love, size doesn’t matter
Weston Allen effortlessly sweeps Sidonie off her feet after proposing to her at the Sandals Grenada resort.

When it’s love, size doesn’t matter

A ‘magical’ proposal against the setting sun at beautiful Sandals Grenada

AS Sidonie Natalee Harris and Weston Lloyd Allen Jr stopped to take pictures on the red carpet at a recent award ceremony in Kingston, strangers rushed to take their photo. The scene was tantamount to the paparazzi shooting a celebrity couple.

The excitement was generated by the difference in the size of the two young people who were at the ceremony to support their grandparents. Weston, 27 years old, was 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 270 pounds and Sidonie, 26, was 4 feet 8 inches and 116 pounds in weight.

In fact, Sidonie confessed, when a friend, Abigail Gershon — who would become her maid of honour — introduced them at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) in October 2017, “I was afraid because of his height.”

Since then, Weston and Sidonie Allen have been scaling the heights of love, still drawing attention and constant comments about the difference in their size. But for them, all that matters is the blissful life they are building together.

It was Weston, a data scientist at the National Commercial Bank (NCB), who first spotted Sidonie, a client advisor at CIBC Caribbean. He was at UTech for an evening class and she was visiting a long-time friend.

“Both of us have mutual acquaintances who knew each other. Nikolloyd Campbell, my friend, had this girl friend, Abigail, who was a good friend of Sidonie. I asked him to speak with Abigail about Sidonie for me, and they set up a meeting,” Weston recalls.

Weston Allen proposes to his lady love, Sidonie Harris and she accepts, at the Sandals Grenada resort.

“I liked what I had seen of Sidonie. Well, one, she looks good. She was easy-going, which I noticed from observing her when she came to see her friend. And she had a nice personality, especially when compared to all the other females that I had been checking out at that age,” he adds.

“On that first evening we chatted a lot. Honestly, I don’t remember what the conversation was about but it was fun. I don’t like small talk so I’m sure I went straight to the point, telling her that I liked her personality and how she flexed with others. We started talking about 9:00 pm and I dropped her home about 1:00 am.”

Sidonie recalls that they chatted until 3:00 am as the conversation continued after he had taken her home. “After a couple minutes we clicked. We just connected that night. His friend was supposed to give me a drop home but Weston decided he would take me home.

“When he brought me home, we talked for hours that night. He left about 3:00 am but it was good. That’s how it was from then on. Every day I would go to UTech to see him. My UWI classes finished from around 3:30 pm. Because he was working and going to evening classes, I would have to wait for him and he would take me home every single night. And we talked, talked, talked, and we just got closer and closer.

“The main thing that attracted me to him was his mindset for a young guy, the way how he speaks, and just the thoughts that come to his mind. He’s an old man in a young guy’s body, and I love that. Yeah, that’s not, that’s not something you see these days with young guys — just one of a kind.”

Weston remembers that all that talking was them getting to know each other. “Our first date of sorts was at the Boulevard Super Centre in Washington Boulevard. My friend had told me that she loved Devon House I Scream, and there was an outlet there. Again, we talked and talked till late.

“So it’s from there that things kind of kicked off and our relationship started. I’d heard and seen enough and I knew that I would like to marry this girl,” Weston recounts.

He was even more certain after Sidonie became seriously ill and had to be at home for a month in 2022. By that time they had moved in together. “I didn’t see myself doing that with anyone else.

“When she got sick it was a stressful period, kind of like a shock to me. But I really wanted to be there for her, to show her my commitment. I had not made up my mind before that about marriage, per se, but now I wanted to. And I knew that with women, they kind of want that comfort.

“I also began to notice something important about her. Although she was sick and could barely move, she insisted on cooking for me and wanted to take care of me, including cleaning the house, even when I told her it was okay and I wanted her to rest and relax to get better.”

Weston soon began to plan the marriage proposal. He first thought of surprising her at the moment he got the keys to a house he had purchased, to mark the occasion of their move into their first home.

“In the meantime, my grandfather offered to sponsor a proposal party at Sandals Grenada, and my mom, Stacy Ann Francis, suggested that I take him up on the offer.” The surprise would even be greater for Sidonie.

“In Grenada, everything went super. The Sandals staff, led by General Manager Peter Fraser and the sales department, helped to arrange everything, with the setting against the backdrop of the sea and the setting sun on the horizon just before it disappeared into the ocean. Sidonie was really surprised and said yes, even while the tears came flowing down.”

Said Sidonie: “The funny thing is that the year before, I thought when he took me on a trip Panama that he was going to propose. I got my hair done and my nails done; I wanted it to look, you know, wedding-like, but there was no proposal.

“So the following year in Grenada, I didn’t expect it. Remembering how disappointed I was in Panama, I didn’t want to get excited only to be disappointed again. But on the beachfront I turned around and I saw that ring. I was like, ‘Yes, finally, after so long.’ And, of course, it was very emotional so I broke down.

“I was wearing heels in sand. I lost my balance a little but yeah, it was most magical. I loved the setting, and I loved the fact that family was there as well to witness it. Weston is the master of surprises.”

From there, the couple progressed to planning their marriage. Actually, Sidonie did the planning and Weston “gave all the support I could”.

The wedding ceremony — conducted by the groom’s grand-uncle, Reverend Vernon Allen, pastor of the Buff Bay Independent Baptist Church, Portland, was an intimate affair on May 24, 2025 at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in St Andrew.

“Everything was so hectic leading up to it, with the planning and the expenses. [It was] like these vendors, they just want to hear a wedding and the zeros were added. But, it turned I couldn’t ask for a better wedding,” says Sidonie. “It turned out to be so magical.

“So many people worked hard to make it a success. My aunt Adelaide Allen, who came in from England, was a tower of strength. My maid of honour Abigail just jumped in even before I asked. My mother-in-law, Auntie Stacy Francis, was there with me, providing me with like inspiration photos of what I can do and how to cut back on cost. My daddy, Allen Harris, he was there financially; Dexios Media’s service was superior. So was kesh_events_decor.

“I’m just happy that we had so many family members there; that was the greatest thing. The support system was there; it meant a lot to me. I had someone I could always turn to for help on the day. Of course, not everything went as planned. I was doing this for the first time, and my inexperience showed, but there were so many persons willing to help. I could just reach out to them and ask, ‘Can you go and grab this?’, or ‘Can you put this here?’ and they were willing.”

The love-smitten couple just returned to Jamaica from their honeymoon cruise to Mexico and The Bahamas, onboard Virgin Voyages out of Miami, Florida.
