Burning Hedge, Sensational Soul capture 1000 and 2000 Guineas at Caymanas Park
BURNING Hedge with champion jockey Raddesh Roman and Sensational Soul with veteran jockey Shane Ellis produced outstanding performances to capture the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, respectively, at Caymanas Park last weekend.
Roman turned in an excellent ride to lead Burning Hedge to victory in the 1000 Guineas on Saturday.
Owned and trained by Carl Anderson, Burning Hedge won at odds at 3-2 in the eight furlong. Lingust was second while third went to Might Gully.
“I was pretty confident coming into the race because I worked her in the mornings and find a couple of issues with her which the trainer said that he did not know about and [that[ we corrected, and so I know that she would have won today,” said Roman.
The victory was Roman’s fourth of day after he opened his account in the first event when he won aboard Maya for trainer Phillip Elliott.
Roman, who is leading the jockeys’ championships with 51 wins this year, also won the fifth race with Woman In Love and the sixth event with J Speith.
In the 2000 Guineas event on Sunday, Sensational Soul got up in the nick of time to catch long-time leader Bob The Builder, ridden by champion jockey Raddesh Roman, to win by 3/4 lengths in a time of 1:42.4.
Sensational Soul, who is owned by Chevan Maharaj and trained by Gary Subratie, recorded splits of 24.2, 47.4 and 1:14.1 over the distance.
Subratie was very delighted with the performances of both horse and jockey.
“He ran a really good race and Shane rode a brilliant race on him,” said Subratie. “I thought he was in trouble leaving [the] half mile but he [didn’t] panic — and that is [the] great thing about Shane Ellis because these are the races that he is bred for and this is what he is really good at and so all praises to him.”
Sensational Soul was well-positioned in fifth place leaving the half mile, before splitting horses entering the home stretch.
Ellis, who is a former champion jockey, asked the horse for everything in the final furlong as he responded well to catch Bob The Builder and win the event which carries a purse of $4 million.
I Dream Again, ridden by Robert Halladean, finished third while fourth went to Strong Mind with Phillip Parchment.
The victory was Ellis’s second on the 10-race card after he had earlier booted home Beneison at odds of 8/5 in the six race.
